I met Earl in the bathroom hallway. He was heading in my direction, fear melting to relief when he saw me.
âYou okay? I saw him follow you.â
âIâm fine, but I canât say the same for him.â I patted his shoulder as I passed.
I went to the bar and downed the double whiskey that was waiting for me.
Cowboy hat spit and asked, âWanna ânother?â
âIâm good. Cashing out for the night.â When he started to dig in his pocket, I held up a hand. âKeep the change.â
He spit and tipped his hat. âThank ya, pretty lady.â
I hit the bar door heading for the parking lot just as Ashlyn was coming in. I caught the swing of the door as she jumped back. âHey. Sorry. I was-â
âLeaving so soon? Too much local culture for you?â she asked.
I looked back, seeing Wayne Jr. being helped down the hall by his posse. They were holding him up while he was trying to hold half a roll of bloody paper towels to his face while pointing in my direction. I let the door shut behind me.
âA tad.â I grabbed Ashlyn by the elbow, pulling her quickly toward Woody. âHow about we take a ride instead?â
âBut my truck-â she started to protest.
âWeâll come back for it.â I opened up the passenger door and all but picked her up and threw her in the seat. I started to close the door and thought better. âYou might want to ⦠umm, you know â¦â I made a bend-over motion with my arm.
âWhat? Why?â
âMight not be the best time to be associated with me,â I offered.
âAJ, what did you do? Why-â
The bar door opened with a slam. Ashlynâs eyes went wide, and I took the opportunity to put a hand on the back of her head, coaxing it to her lap. âJust cause.â
I slammed the door, ran around to the driverâs side, hopped in, and was peeling out when I heard what I assumed was a beer bottle hit Woodyâs tailgate. Normally, I would have turned around and added two more ass-kickings to my resume, but I wouldnât let Ashlyn get caught up in my anger management issues.
âCan I come up out of this extremely embarrassing position now?â Ashlyn asked.
Though I could still see Wayne and his cowboy mafia crew standing in the dust, I knew we were well out of their eyesight range. âYeah, coast is clear.â
Ashlyn sat up, finger combed her hair back in place, and glared at me. âPlease enlighten me as to exactly why you just kidnapped a federal law enforcement agent.
âKidnapped? I think someone is exaggerating just a tad. I simply, softly persuaded you into actions for your own best interest.â
âMy own best interest?â Ashlyn asked.
I tried the sheepish grin thing.
âDonât even try to pull that on me.â She added a pointed finger for emphasis.
Ashlyn was apparently not a fan of the sheepish grin thing. âWhat?â I smiled again to test my theory.
âThat.â She swirled a finger at my face. âThat âIâm innocent and sexyâ grin thing.
